Whilst pollutants may take various forms and as a consequence, several types of continuous on-line measurement may be needed, the measurement of DO is one of the most important indicators of water quality.

Industrial discharge may affect water quality of receiving waters and a simple DO meter can provide continuous monitoring to detect poor water quality. Continuous DO measurement is also used to control the level of aeration to an optimum set point when treating waste water to improve effluent quality and reduce energy consumption.
